The Positive Signs of a Healthy Relationship

No relationship is perfect, and nor can two people in love be happy together all the time. However, you can have the next best thing to that, which is a healthy relationship. To attain that, you don’t necessarily have to be in agreement about everything. Contrary to what other people think, you don’t even have to have the same interests, hobbies, or passions. As long as you have love and respect for each other and you show it constantly, your relationship is sure to be a happy one.

Here are several signs that you and your partner have a healthy relationship.

Signs That You and Your Significant Other Have a Healthy Relationship

1. You are able to speak out.

You have a thriving relationship when both of you are able to express your thoughts, wants, and needs freely to each other without fear of the other shutting them down or dismissing them. When both of you feel heard in the relationship and no topic is considered off limits, that is one sign that you have a positive form of communication with each other.

2. You have personal space.

A mature and happy relationship is when you both have space to pursue your own interests and passions. Just because you’re a couple doesn’t mean you have to spend every waking moment together or you have to have shared interests. On the contrary, that would make for a very suffocating relationship, which would only make both of you miserable.

3. You fight but in a fair way.

Disagreements are a normal thing in intimate relationships, so if you and your partner don’t fight at all, that means you’re both holding back. Fights are not necessarily a bad thing in relationships, but you have to handle them in a productive and fair way. That means there shouldn’t be any name-calling, physical attacks, or verbal putdowns. Give each other the chance to air out your feelings and try to understand where the other is coming from. And this is the most important of all: apologize sincerely if you feel one or both of you are in the wrong.

4. You sincerely like each other.

Your love for each other is based on reality and not on any conditions, such as if one partner wins the lottery or is able to have a baby. As partners, you like and accept each other for who you are now, not for who you could be. You also recognize that both of you are not perfect individuals and shouldn’t be demanded to act as such.

5. Both of you call the shots together.

A healthy relationship is one where the important decisions are made not just by one person alone but by the both of you, as a couple. From choosing what movie to watch to how many children you’re going to have, you take each other’s desires and concerns in mind.

6. You have fun together.

A healthy relationship is not just about serious, mature talks about the future. It is also one where you are able to find joy in each other and in the things you experience together. It is when both of you find happiness even in the small, simple things like inside jokes or making dinner together.
